America In Realization [09.27.14]

"Senator Ted Cruz of Texas invoked the redemptive story of his parents, both plagued by too much drinking, to show the role that faith has played in his life. Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, who took the stage as a video of a fetal ultrasound played for the crowd, said that liberty, virtue and God were intertwined, and he quoted Corinthians to make his point.

It was Mr. Cruz’s father and mother who were the subject of the senator’s highly personal revelation about alcohol abuse. Their drinking eventually led to their split.

“Both of my parents drank far too much. Both of them had serious problems with alcohol,” he said. “And when I was 3 years old my father decided he didn’t want to be married anymore. And he didn’t want a 3-year-old son. So he got on a plane and left.”

Mr. Cruz then told the crowd about the moment his father accepted an invitation to attend a Baptist church.
“He gave his life to Jesus. And he went and bought an airplane ticket and flew back to Calgary to rejoin my mother and to rejoin his son. So when anyone asks: Is faith real? Is a relationship with Jesus real? I can tell you if it were not for my father giving his life to Christ, I would have been raised by a single mother.”

“Liberty is absolutely essential to virtue. It is our freedom to make individual choices that allows us to be virtuous.” Mr. Paul said."
