US - China Relations

A new era of strengthened US - China relations starts.

"Obama, Xi Unveil Commitments to Curb Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Avert Military Confrontations

China and the U.S. struck new climate, military, trade and visa agreements during a marathon two days of talks, as presidents Barack Obama and Xi Jinping made significant strides in improving an often-tense relationship.

In an unexpected move, the two leaders on Wednesday unveiled substantial new commitments to curb greenhouse gas emissions, with China agreeing for the first time to stop increases in carbon dioxide emissions by around 2030 or earlier, U.S. officials said.
Messrs. Xi and Obama also reached two new agreements designed to avert military confrontations in Asia, one on notifying each other of major activities, such as military exercises, and the other on rules of behavior for encounters at sea and in the air.
Shortly before the summit, the two sides completed deals to issue 10-year tourist and business visas and to drop tariffs on semiconductors and other information-technology products, which backers say could cover $1 trillion in trade.
“Our relations are now standing at a new historical point,” Mr. Xi said at their meeting on Wednesday, calling their cooperation a “new model” for relations. “I’m ready to work with you in this direction.”
“There are important differences that we have both practically as well as our vision for our respective countries and our conduct in foreign policy,” Mr. Obama said, but he added that they try to work together when they can.

The Chinese leader said the two sides had agreed to speed talks on a new pact to open up investment between the two, known as the Bilateral Investment Treaty.
The two countries “will make efforts to reach agreement on the core issues and major articles of the treaty text,” Mr. Xi said, adding that they plan talks on some details next year.
In another unexpected move, Mr. Xi took questions at a news conference following the summit.
China, which is still seeing quick industrial growth, set its sights lower, agreeing to stop its increases in carbon dioxide emissions by around 2030 or earlier, with fossil fuels falling to some 80% of Chinese energy use by then, U.S. officials said."

Microsoft Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co. and Apple Inc. are likely to be some of the big beneficiaries if a deal reached between China and the U.S. leads to slashed tariffs on a range of technology products around the world, including videogame consoles, advanced chips and prepaid cards."

Latino / Hispanics

"One quarter of Hispanics in the U.S. lack health insurance, the highest rate for any racial or ethnic group, according to census data. Reducing that number will be one of the Obama administration’s biggest challenges when it reopens health-insurance exchanges for a second year on Saturday.

Latinos and other Americans who lack insurance typically turn to community health centers that cater to the uninsured and emergency rooms, or they forego treatment altogether. Government funding and hospital charity care programs absorb those costs.

In Florida’s Miami-Dade County—where 66% of the population is Hispanic and 33% is uninsured, the highest rate in the state—groups like the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida are training navigators and teaming up with hospitals and Spanish-language outlets to reach Latinos. The Borinquen clinic is hosting its annual health-care festival, which typically draws more than 2,000 people, a week into the new enrollment period."

America In Realization [11.10.14]

"The US and China will grant visas valid for up to a decade to visitors between the two countries under a deal announced by US President Barack Obama. Mr Obama said the move would "benefit everyone," speaking during a high-level summit of Asian business leaders in Beijing, known as Apec.
Visas between the two countries were previously valid for only one year.
China-US relations have been rocky amid increased US presence in the Pacific and concerns over cyber espionage.
But on Monday, Mr Obama told the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) chief executive summit that the US welcomed the rise of a "prosperous, peaceful and stable China".
Under the new visa rules, set to take effect on Wednesday, student visas will be valid for five years, while business and tourist visas will be valid for 10 years.
White House officials said they hoped the deal would bring more Chinese visitors and spending to the US.
"Chinese travellers cite ease of visa policies as the second most important factor in deciding where to travel, behind only cost," the White House said in a statement.
"A competitive visa policy is needed to secure our place as the chosen destination for millions of Chinese travellers."
About 100 million Chinese travelled abroad last year, but less than 2% spent time in the US."

International Relations - Foreign Policy - Diplomacy

"The success of Mr. Obama’s Asia policy hinges on several areas his aides say he will focus on next week: achieving the trade agreement known as the Trans-Pacific Partnership, or TPP; crafting a fresh blueprint for U.S.-China relations; ensuring the democratic endurance of Myanmar; and funding an American military footprint in the region that differs from when Mr. Obama took office."

A new era of strengthened US - China relations is on the horizon.
I am sure both President Barack Obama and President Xi Jinping look forward to that future.

"Sergei Lavrov and John Kerry agree at talks in Beijing to exchange information about situation on Russia-Ukraine border.
Russia's foreign minister Sergey Lavrov has welcomed US involvement in resolving the Ukraine crisis, saying it would be a "step in the right direction," in comments that appear to reflect a toning down in bilateral tension that has been at its worst since the end of the Cold War.
Lavrov's remarks came after a meeting in Beijing with John Kerry, his US counterpart, and precede high-level meetings scheduled to take place between President Vladimir Putin and world leaders at an Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) summit in China, and a Group of 20 summit in Australia, next week."

    Time Magazine Print Edition:

    Time Magazine November, 2014

"Freedom, democracy, justice, these are American principles.

climate change ... I think we should listen to those scientists and experts.

marijuana ... These kinds of substances are generally considered poison, very bad. But for particular illnesses, this is sometimes deliberately used. So that’s up to the doctor, or up to scientists. The ability to judge reality is something very unique. So if that [our brain] is damaged, that’s awful. So alcohol and drugs are very bad.

    [A Few Words:
The most important endowment we humans are blessed with is our "Consciousness".
"Controlling Consciousness" is the key to health, wealth and most importantly, happiness and satisfaction.
So anything that hampers our ability of "Controlling consciousness" is bad (for example, drinking alcohol damages our ability of judgement).
And anything that aids us in "Controlling Consciousness" (for example, Meditation, Mindfulness, Yoga, deep breathing, etc.) is good and highly recommended.]

Tibetan protester who is on the verge of sacrificing himself through self-immolation

India-China ... Genuine good relations based on mutual trust [could] really make a significant contribution to economic development, as well as to education and spirituality.

Xi Jinping ... He is courageously tackling corruption, quite effectively. Fearlessly. [But] real development must take place in rural areas. It is not a solution to build new, big cities. [Also] 1.3 billion Chinese people have every right to know reality … Censorship is an unrealistic method that actually develops distrust and suspicion. The Chinese judicial system must be lifted up to the international standard of judiciary systems. Then these 1 billion poor people can have some kind of protection."

    Israel - Palestine Relations

“So the safety guard should be put at the whole project rather than the task,” said a Palestinian. “Exactly,” answered an Israeli Jew, who added: “Also, should the buffer be hidden or public? What do you think?” A second Palestinian spoke up: “Who’s gonna hide it?” The room broke into laughter. Yet another Palestinian, oblivious to an abstract painting of the Star of David behind him, asked: “Do you want the truth, or do you want the truth plus protection?”

Cisco’s John Chambers recalls a visit he paid to Mahmoud Abbas at his office in Ramallah. To his surprise the Palestinian Authority president had his entire cabinet assembled in the room. Chambers pledged $10 million to help seed and mentor Arab startups. “We’re not in it for press,” Chambers told Abbas, “but I’m happy to disclose what we’re doing, if you want, because sometimes it can help prompt other companies to climb aboard.”

“Would you really be willing to do that?” asked Abbas.

As soon as Chambers confirmed, Abbas flung his office doors open, exposing a dozen waiting Palestinian reporters and photographers who stampeded into the room."

I am sure Microsoft Founder Bill Gates and CEO Satya Nadella and Google CEO Larry Page and Co-Founder Sergey Brin would take notes.

    Russia - Ukraine Relations

"Russia and Ukraine have reached a preliminary agreement on a price for winter gas supplies, officials from both countries said, moving closer to a deal that would ease concerns that the countries’ dispute could disrupt supplies to Europe via Ukraine."

    Indonesia

"Elected in July, the former furniture exporter and son of a carpenter now leads the world's third-largest democracy, with a population of about 250 million people.

Joko Widodo, the charismatic outsider who won Indonesia's presidency, made a call for national reconciliation and unity as he was sworn in.
Popularly known as Jokowi, the 53-year-old took the oath of office at a ceremony held at parliament in Jakarta.
The former Jakarta governor is the first president not to have come from the military or political elite.

After reading the oath of office, he told Indonesians that "unity and working hand in hand are prerequisites for us to be a great nation. We will never become a great nation if we are stuck with division".
"This is a historic moment for us all to move together, to work and work," he said.
US Secretary of State John Kerry and Australia's Prime Minister Tony Abbott were among those who attended the inauguration.
"We used to have our transfers of power marked by bloodshed," said an elderly Indonesian man to me today. "Today - we have this: a huge party."
One man told me he had taken the day off work and brought his young daughters to witness this event because they should know what kind of man makes a "good president". Another woman, a school teacher, said that Jokowi was someone "like her" and that's why she is so thrilled he's become the leader of her country.

    Joko Widodo: Key facts
    • Born in 1961 in city of Solo, the son of a wood-seller
    • Began political career with the PDI-P party when he was elected mayor of Solo in 2005
    • Elected for second term in 2010 with more than 90% of the vote
    • Elected governor of Jakarta in 2012
    • Backer of technology who promises to implement "e-governance" to help cut bureaucratic corruption
One of the first, and biggest, challenges Mr Widodo faces is Indonesia's at least $20bn (£12bn) fuel subsidy bill. He has said he plans to reduce subsidies, but the move has been met with opposition."
