দেশের অসংখ্য এনজিও নিজেদের মতো করে কাজ করে যাচ্ছে, কত বিচিত্র তাদের আইডিয়া, কত আন্তরিক তাদের কাজকর্ম;

Entrepreneurship (উদ্যোক্তা) Development

International Relations - Foreign Policy - Diplomacy

Britain In Realization [12.17.14] : Engineering In Britain

Engineering In Britain

Engineering Education

"The Science Museum is hosting a new engineering exhibition -  aimed at 11-15 year olds opened today and will run for the next three years. Engineer Your Future features a variety of objects and interactive games and was described by a museum spokesperson as "an exhibition about careers that doesn't feel about careers".
The exhibition includes a game to design a Mars rover, a 3D printed city onto which a game is projected and challenges to deliver luggage in an airport and run trains on time ... advice also available about how to pursue a career in engineering or take up further studies."

"The new elevator technology, nicknamed Multi, can go sideways as well as up and down and will begin testing in 2016.
The innovative new elevator uses magnetic levitation (maglev) technology"

Engineering Prizes, Awards, Honors
"Tim Berners Lee, Louis Pouzin, Robert Kahn,Vint Cerf and Marc Andreessen have been awarded the first Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering in recognition of their work on the internet and the web."

Computer Reimagined [Architecture; UI; Materials]
"By 2008, Hawking's hand was too weak to use the clicker.
... "cheek switch". Attached to his glasses, it could detect, via a low infrared beam, when Hawking tensed his cheek muscle.
By 2011, he managed only about one or two words per minute
designed by Words Plus. It provided him with a keyboard on the screen and a basic word-prediction algorithm. A cursor automatically scanned across the keyboard by row or by column and he could select a character by moving his cheek to stop the cursor.
Hawking now uses an adaptive word predictor from London startup SwiftKey which allows him to select a word after typing a letter, whereas Hawking's previous system required him to navigate to the bottom of his user interface and select a word from a list.
But He was used to predicting his own word predictor."

The new version of Hawking's user interface includes contextual menus that provide Hawking with various shortcuts to speak, search or email
"The idea is to have a camera pointed at Stephen's face to pick up not just his cheek movements but other facial movements," says Wood. "He could move his jaw sideways, up and down, and drive a mouse and even potentially drive his wheelchair.
a joystick that attaches to Hawking's chin and allows him to navigate his wheelchair independently."

[I wish I could engineer a better and more suitable User Interface for Dr. Stephen Hawking.]

Around Latin America & Caribbean [12.16.14]

Mexico, Nicaragua & Central America

Changing the Hearts and Minds of Latin American "machismo" men

"FROM the age of 13 Victor Toruño walked the dirt streets of Hialeah, a slum in Managua, Nicaragua’s capital, with a shotgun in his hands.

In 2013 social workers from a Nicaraguan NGO, the Centre for the Prevention of Violence (CEPREV), approached Mr Toruño in Hialeah. They showed him crude cartoons that mirrored his own life of violence, alcoholism and domestic abuse. “I saw myself in every image,” he says. It affected him so deeply that he agreed to attend workshops to discuss the impulses that machismo had encouraged in him.

Machismo .. the origins of the word are Spanish, it is a lazy stereotype applied to Latin American men.

The murder rate among men aged 15-29 in Mexico and Central America is more than four times the global average for that age group, according to the UN. A 2011 study of murders in Ciudad Juárez, on Mexico’s border with the United States, contends that the sadistic humiliation of victims that marks these crimes arises from the region’s corrosive understanding of masculinity.

Young men, competing for jobs in a global market, have fewer opportunities; studious women have more. Denied the role of breadwinner, some men seek to prove themselves through crime, violence and domestic abuse. Often they have grown up without fathers because of divorce, war or migration.

During 15 years CEPREV says it has broken up about 90 gangs in Nicaragua by focusing on young men’s exaggerated sense of masculinity and the violence that it leads to.

In Mexico a programme run by the interior ministry employs social workers to counsel children on the perils of machismo.

“I used to think women were useless. Now I think they are a treasure,” he says. He helps at home with the children and the housework, and shrugs it off when others laugh at him. he has persuaded his gang mates to renounce guns and enter counselling. Without it, he says, “I’d be dead, in a wheelchair or in prison by now.” Half a dozen wiry young men around him nod in agreement."

GeoEngineering

GeoEngineering could be applied to

  • Deal with Climate Change
  • Predict and Control Natural Disasters

"Experiments designed to learn more about ways of geoengineering the climate should be allowed to proceed
SHINY things absorb less heat when left in the sun. This means that if the Earth could be made a little shinier it would be less susceptible to global warming. Ways to brighten it, such as adding nanoscale specks of salt to low clouds, making them whiter, or putting a thin haze of particles into the stratosphere, are the province of “geoengineering”. The small band of scientists which has been studying this subject over the past decade or so has mostly been using computer models. Some of them are now proposing outdoor experiments—using seawater-fed sprayers to churn out particles of the exact size needed to brighten clouds, or spewing sulphur particles from underneath a large balloon 20km up in the sky ...."

"Scientific studies of techniques for deliberately modifying the climate are getting ready to move out of the laboratory"

Cloud Computing

"The developer tools of Microsoft’s Azure cloud service are superior, he says, and he likes its personalized customer service.
“The Battle in Seattle.” (Microsoft vs Amazon in Cloud Computing)
Synergy Research Group puts Amazon’s share of the $14.5 billion worldwide market for cloud infrastructure services at 27 percent as of this year’s third quarter, down slightly from 28 percent the year before, while Azure’s has climbed three percentage points to 10 percent. “It’s clearly a two-horse race now"
Azure now supports seven versions of Linux
Microsoft is also trying to recruit customers among the young Web companies that are Amazon’s main market. It offers members of some tech accelerators or incubators $5,000 a month of Azure services at no cost for up to a year.
Microsoft’s Guthrie says salespeople sign up more than 10,000 Azure customers each week."

Big Data / Visualization

Artificial Intelligence

"DeepMind researchers showed off software that had learned to play three classic Atari games - Pong, Breakout and Enduro - better than an expert human.
DeepMind had made use of a newly fashionable machine learning technique called deep learning, which involves processing data through networks of crudely simulated neurons. But it had combined deep learning with other tricks to make something with an unexpected level of intelligence.
DeepMind had combined deep learning with a technique called reinforcement learning,
Hassabis dreams of creating “AI scientists” that could do things like generate and test new hypotheses about disease in the lab. When prodded, he also says that DeepMind’s software could also be useful to robotics."

"Richard Socher is trying to bring A.I. tools to a larger audience. A Stanford Ph.D., Socher in 2009 helped create ImageNet, a set of benchmarks that A.I. researchers use to compare their image-recognition software in an annual online competition.
[Applications of text- and photo-recognition Software:]
MetaMind taught its software to study mammograms and incorporate doctors’ reports, to identify evidence of breast cancer, for a radiology company. For a consumer electronics company, it wrote an algorithm that could recognize foods based on cell phone photos; ... it’s working on ways to count calories looking at images.
MetaMind is also working to help a financial-services firm evaluate the risk of a stock selloff by scanning corporate financial disclosures, and to help a customer-retention company identify online interactions that suggest when a retailer needs to reach out to an angry customer

Most A.I. programs can’t scan written and visual media at once

Matthew Zeiler, the CEO of image-focused A.I. startup Clarifai in New York, says his company has been most focused on “real-world applications” such as tracking brands in social media photos or scanning security footage for incidents.

According to the ImageNet benchmarks Socher designed—MetaMind's software correctly classifies objects 92.4 percent of the time; based on the results from this year’s ImageNet competition, that’s second only to Google."

Privacy vs Security

"Right now, confidence in governance of the cloud is a larger issue than the technical concerns of the cloud," said Jim Reavis, CEO of the Cloud Security Alliance.
Financially, the stakes are high: A whopping $677 billion is expected to be spent on cloud services worldwide, according to research firm Gartner. Western Europe, meanwhile, is the second-biggest spender in cloud computing, behind only North America, Gartner said."

(ক) মাথাপিছু আয়: তিন বছরের গড় মাথাপিছু জাতীয় আয় (জিএনআই);
(খ) মানবসম্পদ সূচক, যেটি পুষ্টি, স্বাস্থ্য, স্কুলে ভর্তি ও শিক্ষার হারের সমন্বয়ে তৈরি হয়;
