Smart Government

"Database Planned for Next Year Would Help Flag Clusters of Customer Complaints

The regulators plan next year to allow states for the first time to access online information stemming from examinations of brokerage firms by other states. The proposed computer tool, using a new database, would flag problem areas and highlight the types of firms that cause the most trouble for investors.

The tool could “help states to police clusters of troubled stockbrokers, by making it easier to identify problem areas in which those brokers may be involved,” Mr. Huggs said.

A Wall Street Journal investigation, published Wednesday, analyzed the records of about 550,000 stockbrokers, identifying 16 U.S. hot spots where troubled brokers tend to concentrate. Each hot spot had high levels of brokers with three or more disciplinary red flags over their careers, an industry measure of a troubled adviser."

"Carl Icahn, the famed activist investor, is increasingly pushing for, and getting, a say in the CEO searches at some companies.
It’s a little-noticed reason of power for his recent investment successes, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday. When Mr. Icahn pushed for board seats at Hertz Global Holdings Inc. HTZ -4.58% in September, he touted his firms capabilities helping companies search for leaders. He soon earned three seats including two on the CEO search committee at the car-rental company.
Mr. Icahn has a team of lieutenants he turns to for searches, including Vincent Intrieri, Samuel Merksamer and Jonathan Christodoro.
The 78-year-old Mr. Icahn also personally interviews many candidates before the ruling is made official. Mr. Icahn says he tells prospective CEOs he doesn’t micromanage the business and will support their decisions."
