Studying Medicine

In November 2013, I messaged my younger brother and sister, both of whom are studying Medicine at two different medical colleges.

This is what I wrote.
  1. Imagine your dreams, desires coming true. Feel the pleasure. Think how becoming a great physician can help make your dreams, desires into reality. (Say to yourself, "Yeah! I can turn all of my dreams into reality! What am I waiting for?") Now stop doing everything else and start studying! (Motivate yourself regularly.)
  2. Ignite your curiosity. (Say, "Hey, I know this and this about how we see things with our eyes! I want to understand the whole vision thing more deeply!") As you read, never lose sight of the things you wanted to know and the questions you had in your mind when you started out. As you learn more, ask more questions and study, think to find out answers to your questions. (Write them down if you find it useful.) (Say, "So now I understand how image forms on the retina, but how does the signal reach the brain?") Get excited! (Say, "So there is a primary visual area and a secondary visual area!") Feel proud of yourself! (Say to yourself, "Huh! How many of my friends can explain / understand it like the way I can!") Become passionate!
  3. Just as we build model of a person ("he is such and such"), build models of different systems and integrate “everything” you learn to those models.
  4. Build models of different systems and subsystems: Cardiovascular systems (subsystem: heart), Nervous systems (subsystems: spinal cord, eyes-vision, brain etc.). Integrate whatever you learn about a system in that system’s model. Visualize – try to see everything in your mind’s eyes. As you learn new concepts integrate them into respective models. Draw pictures, diagrams. Write on those pictures, diagrams.
  5. Consider hierarchy of systems (how cells make different tissues, tissues make different organs).
  6. Learn how different systems interact (e.g., stress triggers hormonal responses: endocrine system). Visualize – draw - use graphs / networks (diagrams with lines connecting different systems).
  7. When learning pathology, build models of diseases. Now model how different systems (cardiovascular, immune) work / dysfunction (as a result of e.g., a particular class of virus / bacteria) to give rise to diseases and the treatment plan. (Say, "So this is why the treatment plan for this disease is that pharmaceutical!")
  8. Never forget to visualize! When you visualize / draw diagrams, you can take in a lot of information at a time and all the facts you learn seem real.

New Catholic Teachings

God, God on Earth:

  1. "All things were created through him and for him. The Father has brought the universe into existence through his Son. This cosmic reality is the Christian message, the faith of the church. .... Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe."
  2. "Before the Lord the whole universe is as a grain from a balance or a drop of morning dew come down upon the earth. While we stand in awe of the splendor and vastness of galaxies, now seen in unparalleled detail, the Bible invites us to draw near to God, the all-powerful creator of this universe in all its immense and ancient beauty. God, the creator of the universe, is a God of love. God is not an abstract philosophical being standing passively at the origins of the universe. God who creates innumerable galaxies in their mysterious beauty is the same God who has personally loved each of us into being, creating us in and for love of God. God desires your friendship and the friendship of all those who are lost. And this divine desire inspires us to the same awe and wonder we experience in seeing telescopic images of the universe."
  3. "God is going to send his Spirit to empower and guide someone to rule humanity for him. He will straighten out society according to God’s ideas of justice. How this will happen is more than the human mind can grasp."

  4. "A child will be born who will be named Emmanuel, which is simply the Hebrew for “God is with us!”

  5. "We need something — Someone — to direct our hearts, to empower us to love, to comfort us in darkness. Maturing involves coming to see more and more clearly that every good thought and plan and act comes from the God who loves us as a mother loves the new baby blinking up at her."

  6. "God longs to be with each one of us."

  7. "The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity is not a theological abstraction but a graced opportunity to contemplate the wondrous love of God who is a community of divine person. The psalmist invites us to praise the goodness of the divine community of Father, Son and Holy Spirit as he gives thanks for the heavens, the moon and the stars, animals, birds and fish of the sea. These marvelous works of God, the divine artist, are crowned by the creation of man and woman, created from the beginning to exist in a community of love. The author of Proverbs echoes the same song of praise to God for creating the heavens, the seas, all earth’s creatures, and for finding “delight in the human race.”"

  8. “Merciful and gracious is the Lord, slow to anger and abounding in kindness."

  9. "God’s accomplishment will include every way He acted in and through those who cooperated with Him. That means that all of our efforts to work with God will be revealed as part of his plan of salvation brought to fulfillment."

  10. "The Christian writer, C.S. Lewis once wrote, “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.”"

  11. "To call God “Homemaker” would be entirely appropriate. He sustains the immense universe in which Earth has come into existence and has become home for all of us."

  12. "The word of God calls to conversion, heals, and raises up."

  13. "The desire for God is written by God on each human heart."

  14. "Faith is a love story with God. God loves us as one who is enamoured: not to the minimum but to the maximum."

And then all the way down to the governance and guidance of individuals, the so called guardian angels, which we all have."
  5. "The angels that move the planets ...  the job for the highest angel that has to do with the governing of the material universe under the even higher angels, the ones that are directly related to the worship and glory of God."
  6. "The assistance of an angel to protect us from an accident or to inspire the mind of a scientist to notice what is necessary to find a cure or vaccine. 4. "Christians are given opportunity to gain much strength and courage by meditating on Jesus’ Lordship and the fact that all of us are by right subjected to his dominion. This is a day to “freely acknowledge” that Jesus “must reign in our minds” through submission to the truth he has revealed. “He must reign in our wills,” as we obey him. “He must reign in our hearts,” as we love and cleave to him alone."

  5. "God knows our every need so our prayers are meant to draw us closer to God. The fruit of faith-filled, persistent prayer is a gradual transformation of our inner life into childlike faith and rest in the peace and mercy of God. Artificial Intelligence and its impact on Jobs, Employment

Artificial Intelligence and its impact on Jobs, Employment

In the hands of a sufficiently smart inventor, AI can replace any job, even 'creative' ones.

Employment has to be and will be protected through government regulation.

As we look into the future, we see manual work gradually getting replaced by AI & automation, leaving intellectual pursuits that are core to human life and happiness behind for humans.

Distinction between Politics of Developed and Emerging Nations

Distinction between Politics of Developed and Emerging Nations

In emerging nations, national systems: economic, financial, educational, industrial, are far behind currently available technology & human knowledge frontiers. This leaves room for improvement. So in those nations, political debate centers around "development". Political parties distinguish themselves with manifesto or propaganda of better development models.

In developed nations like United States and United Kingdom, nation's systems are close to possibility frontiers. Debate (in US, UK) centers around policies / issues, legal or economic choices:

  • Equality or Pro-market
  • Immigration
  • Tax
  • Climate change
  • Foreign policy
  • Healthcare expansion or contraction

Development (Growth) in developed nations require (in many cases) revolution in human knowledge and understanding

  • Infrastructure for flying cars & self driving cars
  • Smart Cities
  • Revision of our current understanding of Finance

How to pioneer a New Mathematical Science

How to pioneer a New Mathematical Science

  1. Define/Invent new quantities in the discipline under study (Ex.: Force, mass, acceleration in Physics).
  2. Discover mathematical relationship among quantities. (See, for example, how Claude Shannon pioneered Information Theory.)

Sciences that are currently Quantitative / Statistical in nature (Example: Economics; Business problems currently tamed with Big Data; Atmospheric science) will be turned into Mathematical Sciences.

Grand Challenge in Neuroscience

Grand challenge in Neuroscience

Elucidating Neural coding schemes - how objects, concepts, reasoning and thoughts are represented in the brain.

Biology to come

Biology to come

A great many quantities will be invented in Biology / Biological Sciences to turn the descriptive discipline / disciplines into mathematical sciences.
The quantities will have relationships at several levels of abstraction:
    Genes with biochemical activities
Biochemical activities with Cellular structures and functions
    Cellular functions with Tissue parameters
Physiological/Pathological & Anatomical parameters will have mathematical relationship with genes and cellular activities.
